A note on AirBnb's and subletting in Stockholm
In Stockholm city, most people live in co-ops (“bostadsrätt”), which means you buy the right to live in an apartment and become part-owner of the building through a housing association. You pay a monthly fee to the association, and you can renovate or sell the apartment just like typical ownership. Rentals (“hyresrätt”) work like regular renting, but long-term rentals are hard to find because the system is regulated and many people wait years in the official queue (or… pay eye-watering sums under the table). Long story short: don’t expect tons of Airbnb options — short-term rentals are often not allowed in co-ops or rental buildings.
The easiest way to get around is by tunnelbana (subway), which connects all central areas quickly. A tram runs from Central Station to Djurgården, stopping near the main museums. Buses are also reliable and cover most areas, and the city center is very walkable.
Tip: One travel card or mobile ticket works across subway, buses, trams, and ferries. Buy it here, in the SL app or by credit card onboard
The easiest way to get to/from Arlanda Airport is with the airport train Arlanda Express. It takes about 20 minutes to Stockholm Central and the train depart every 12 minutes in rush hour traffic. For one person, the rate is about $34. Purchase the tickets at their websites, in the booths at the arrival hall or at the platform.
The cheaper, yet convenient, alternative is Flygbussarna, which takes about 45 minutes into town. This option is best if you are staying in the area of St Eriksplan which is the stop before the Central Station. One person fare is ca $10. Purchase the tickets on their website, in the booths at the arrival hall or at the bus stop outside the arrival hall, or pay with card onboard the bus.
Of course you can also grab a taxi and head into town. Traffic usually only occurs during rush hours 4-7pm. The maximum price to Stockholm city center is $75 (1–4 passengers) or $120 (5–8 passengers). Travel time by car is approximately 45 minutes. Avoid independent taxi drivers, and stick to Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir, Taxi 020 (Sverigetaxi). There is also Uber and Bolt.
